First: Is Your Water Heater Electric or Gas?

The troubleshooting steps are completely different depending on the type. Find yours below.

Electric Water Heater

  1. 1

    Check your circuit breaker

Find the breaker labeled 'Water Heater' in your electrical panel. It's usually a double breaker. If it's tripped, flip it fully OFF then back ON.

  2. 2

    Press the red reset button

On the front of the heater, remove the upper access panel. Press the red high-temperature cutoff button firmly until it clicks.

  3. 3

    Wait 45–60 minutes

Electric heaters take time to reheat a full tank. Run a faucet after waiting.

  4. 4

If it trips again, call us

Repeated tripping means a failed element or thermostat. Don't keep resetting — it can be dangerous.

Gas Water Heater

  1. 1

    Smell for gas first

If you detect a rotten egg or sulfur smell, leave the house immediately, don't touch any switches, and call your gas company and 911 from outside.

  2. 2

    Check the pilot light

Look through the small window at the bottom of the tank. If the pilot is out (no blue flame), it needs to be relit.

  3. 3

    Relight the pilot

Set the gas control knob to Pilot, push and hold it down, click the igniter, and hold for 60 seconds. Then turn to On.

  4. 4

    If pilot won't stay lit

A thermocouple that won't hold the flame is the most likely cause. It's an inexpensive repair. Call us for same-day service.
